Zermatt, at the foot of the Matterhorn, is since long known for its sustainability efforts. The car free resort has taken upon itself to show the way for a tourism in pace with nature. Since last week even more so, when BE WTR, the Swiss, innovative water brand, opened its new, ultra-local water plant in the heart of the village.

BE WTR is on a mission to help the world hydrate in a way that is better for man and for the planet. By upgrading the local tap water in its sustainable, high-technology bottling plants, BE WTR creates still and sparkling water that serves many of the world’s finest hotels and restaurants. Without single-use plastics, waste or transport. Last week the brand, also known as the new, official water partner of Bocuse D’Or, opened its latest site in Zermatt. The facility will, at full speed, have a capacity to provide many of the legendary resort’s hotels and restaurants with their water needs, thereby ensuring that bottled water no longer needs to be transported up into the sensitive mountain environment. From the start clients include legendary Grand Hotel Zermatterhof, Michelin red-and green-star restaurant Brasserie Uno and the amazing restaurant Chez Heini.

The opening of BE WTR Zermatt comes the same week as the brand wins the prestigious Zenith Global Water Award for “Best Technology Innovation”.
– As a mountaineer and a part-time Zermatt resident myself, I am extremely proud of opening our doors here, says Mike Hecker, founder of BE WTR. It is impressive to see how sustainability, innovation and high gastronomy go hand in hand here on the local scene, and it echoes very much how we want our company to work and grow on all markets. To start our activities in Zermatt with such prestigious clients is a dream come true.

The BE WTR water plant is the first solution of its kind in the mountains, made possible through a collaboration with Zermatt Matterhorn Brauerei AG. The plant sources Zermatt drinking water, which it filters and fills, still or sparkling, into reusable elegant glass bottles. The water bottles are sold exclusively in Zermatt, in a 100% closed-loop model.
